A24 has opened the doors to Slayground, and this Halloween attraction looks like the kind of place you’ll regret stepping into.
The studio dropped a mysterious teaser for the horror movie ahead of Resident Evil in theaters this weekend, and the official promo has now made its way online. The footage takes us inside a creepy haunted attraction where the manufactured scares appear to be sharing space with something much more dangerous.
Slayground is the latest film from Jeremy Saulnier, the filmmaker behind Green Room and Rebel Ridge. The project was previously titled October, but A24 has now revealed its new name along with our first taste of what Saulnier has cooked up.
Described as a Halloween-set fugitive thriller, Slayground features a killer cast that includes Imogen Poots (Green Room), James Badge Dale (The Empty Man), Matty Matheson (The Bear), Cory Michael Smith (Saturday Night), Chase Sui Wonders (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), Young Mazino (The Last of Us), and Stephen Root (Widow’s Bay).
World of Reel offers some additional details about how the haunted attraction fits into the story, explaining, “Slayground takes its title from the haunted attraction where the lead character works.”
The outlet also reveals more about the fugitive thriller at the center of the movie: “the plot follows Cory Michael Smith’s character, the primary suspect in a mass murder investigation, after he escapes police custody. He goes on the run, attempting to prove his innocence while becoming the target of a massive manhunt.”
A massive police search colliding with the chaos of a Halloween attraction filled with masks, costumes, fake blood, and staged scares sounds like a pretty fun playground for the director to play in.
The teaser leans right into that location, bringing viewers inside Slayground as the fake horrors begin to blur with a very real threat. It doesn’t reveal much about the larger story, but it gives us a good look at the grim Halloween atmosphere Saulnier is building.
Saulnier wrote and directed Slayground, with A24 producing and releasing the film. There’s still no official release date, but the movie’s website, RunLikeHell.com, is taking sign-ups for updates and features a countdown clock worth keeping an eye on.
