For a long time, prestige TV libraries were easy to think of as something close to permanent, but the last few years have made that feel a lot less certain. Warner Bros. Discovery, for one, pulled finished shows off its own streaming service, and entire series like Westworld ended up being licensed to free platforms. The ongoing merger turbulence around the studio has also left creators openly wondering whether their work will still be available to stream a decade from now.
That has helped make physical media feel a bit more like an insurance policy, and it would be fair to say that writers and showrunners have been among the more vocal recent supporters of disc releases. The creators of Hacks — Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky — are clearly among them, now that the show’s five-season run is finally getting the physical release they’d been hoping for. Hacks: The Complete Series is officially coming to Blu-ray.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced this week that all five seasons of the Emmy-winning comedy will be collected in a single box set arriving this fall, in time for the holidays, with never-before-seen bonus features included. Early technical details point to 1080p transfers in the show’s 2.00:1 aspect ratio with English SDH subtitles. The announcement comes weeks before the Emmys on September 14, where the show’s final season will compete with a record-breaking 24 nominations for a comedy series. Regarding the release, creators Downs, Aniello, and Statsky said in a joint statement:
“We are so excited the complete series will be available on Blu-ray. Deborah Vance knew the power of physical media when she sold her special on QVC, so we know she’d be proud. It will also include bloopers and deleted scenes! We hope one day in the distant future children will huddle up in their bunkers and take their minds off the robot wars by laughing and crying at this powerful tale of dark mentorship and female creative collaboration” (via Variety).
In May 2026, as the finale approached, the trio told Deadline they were actively trying to get a full-series physical release made, and Aniello was strikingly candid about why. “That does really put so much power of the distribution of art in the hands of algorithms and people’s whims and certain executives not liking somebody’s brother, so they take down their movie or show or whatever. It is really scary, the idea of censorship, especially as more and more companies are bought up by other companies,” she said. She was equally direct about the ask itself:
“And so, we’re really hoping to make a Hacks DVD box set, for one. We’re trying to make that happen. That’s an exclusive. Please go buy it, not because we make any money off of it. We just want to make sure the show stays in existence for as long as DVD players exist.”
At the time, there were no official plans, and only the first season had ever been released on disc, back in 2022. Hacks holds a 98% Tomatometer score across its run, and it earned Jean Smart four Emmys for a role that may well come to define the later stretch of her career much the way Designing Women defined an earlier one. The story of Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels ended with a finale that many critics treated as one of the stronger sendoffs in recent memory. It feels fitting that a show about a comedian so preoccupied with controlling her own legacy will now sit on shelves, where it is at least somewhat insulated from the licensing churn that shapes so much of streaming. The Hacks Complete Series Blu-ray arrives this fall, with a firm date likely to follow from Universal in the coming weeks.
