We’ve been seeing a lot of curly ‘dos recently, from Connor Storrie’s YSL campaign to the little ringlets dangling over the foreheads of Homer Gere and Pedro Pascal. They’re angelic and handsome and bouncy, which is no bad thing. In fact, it’s exactly how I’d describe Andrew Garfield. But it seems that he’s gunning for a new vibe, one with a little more menace.
He debuted it at the LA premiere of The Uprising. A new side parting was on show, and his fluffy waves had been restrained by some strong gel. There was a slight quiff combed into the front section, which added a bit of volume. The rest was tucked behind the ears, with some curls free down below.
Forget the funny, nice guy he actually is; this look feels more serious. Make a risky joke in his direction and get a cold glare in reply. He’d probably start fiddling with a pinky signet ring, give the nod to one of his team and have you quietly escorted from sight. With a couple of licks of gel, Garfield is giving off strong Mafiosa energy.

He paired the look, quite appropriately, with a pretty serious Loro Piana suit. Its dark grey pinstripe fabric was cut into a double-breasted suit jacket and straight-leg trousers. He then went print heavy by wearing with a striped shirt and polka dot tie. Altogether, it was the look of not-so-respectable businessmen who does not-so-respectable business.
We’ve seen him in a lot of ‘70s-leaning looks this year, from beige Vivienne Westwood suits and double-denim courtesy of Ralph Lauren. For the more relaxed fits like that, the hair stayed chill. Earlier this summer, my colleague Adam Cheung reported on Garfield’s hair when he rocked up to the prim and proper Wimbledon stands with a bouncy, shaggy lid. It made heads turn, maybe because he looked a little like the Dude from The Big Lebowski, but in a handsome and likable way. Now, he’s pairing his sharp, old-school tailoring with an equally-fitting haircut.
There’s only going to be a select few who will be able to achieve this style. Firstly, you need shoulder length hair that has a bit of natural texture to it.
“If you’re growing your hair out from short, then you’ll need some patience,” says says barber TJ Hunt of Time Shoreditch. “Hair grows around half an in to an inch a month, so Andrew has been in it for the long haul!”
