The Omaha-born, New York-based DIY indie rocker Anna McClellan released her Space, you big cloud on Father/Daughter earlier this year, and she just sang backup on a bunch of songs from Greg Freeman’s new album All Set The Bone. Next month, McClellan will release another EP, her first for new label Exploding In Sound. This one is called South Of Dodge, and the title refers to the street that divides Omaha in half.
South Of Dodge has evidently been in the works for a few years. McClellan and engineer Adam Roberts began work on the tracks when McClellan was still living in Omaha, and they returned to them relatively recently in NYC. Opening track “Drank Earlier” is an oblique ramble about addiction. Here’s what she says about it:
“Drank Earlier” is about my addiction to the pain of being in love. It’s also about my addiction to drinking and the way the two worked in cahoots to keep me in a cycle of self-harm and immediate gratification. I wrote it in 2023 and didn’t finally stop drinking until early this year, January 25, 2026. I knew at the time I was perpetuating a cycle, I name that in the song, but it still took me a few years to break it.
