Apple TV’s hit sci-fi thriller series Dark Matter is climbing the streaming charts just as fans are looking for something to fill the void following Silo‘s Season 3 finale.
Per FlixPatrol, Dark Matter has claimed the #4 spot on the list of the Top 10 streaming series currently available via Apple TV in the United States. If that weren’t enough, Dark Matter has made its way onto the Top 10 lists for a staggering 94 different countries in total on the platform, more than cementing its status as a worldwide pop culture phenomenon.
Dark Matter Compliments Apple TV’s Robust Sci-Fi Catalog
Developed for streaming by Blake Crouch from his hit 2016 novel of the same name, Dark Matter stars Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen, a brilliant physicist whose idyllic life is upended when he is drugged and kidnapped by an unseen figure. After coming to, Jason discovers himself in another world where he traded in his chance at a family of his own for his career, only for his work to uncover an endless multiverse of opportunities.
With that, Jason sets out on a quest to not just return home to his native reality, but to save his wife and son from falling into the clutches of a twisted version of himself. Along with Edgerton, Dark Matter stars Jennifer Connelly as Jason’s wife Daniela, Oakes Fegley as their son Charlie, Jimmi Simpson as Jason’s friend Ryan, and Alice Braga as Amanda Lucas, the alternate Jason’s therapist who joins the primary Jason in his attempts to return home.
Dark Matter has been widely lauded by critics and audiences since its debut, with Season 1 garnering an 81% “Certified Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across 59 verified critical reviews. Dark Matter Season 2, which is currently still unfolding with new episodes every Friday on Apple TV, upped the ante with a 92% “Certified Fresh” rating, as well as an 87% audience-generated “Popcornmeter” score.
What the Future Looks Like for Dark Matter on Apple TV
Despite the rave reviews, Dark Matter has yet to be renewed for Season 3 on Apple TV. With more than half of Season 2 left to go, that doesn’t come as any major surprise, although the fact that the series’ creator already has plans for Season 3 is another good sign that audiences can likely look forward to more Dark Matter in the near future.
During an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Dark Matter producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry confirmed that the series was developed with three seasons in mind. “We designed season two, and when we were pitching it to Apple, and we were going through the process of getting it greenlit we designed the whole show to be three seasons,” Ben-Zekry stated at the time.
“We see it as a trilogy and that would be such an amazing opportunity to get to end something on your own terms and having a real round and complete story. And we’re very hopeful that that’s something that happens.” Ben-Zekry added, “We’re also just so excited for people to see season two because I think it’s just going to be so much fun for the fans.”
Dark Matter is currently available for streaming on Apple TV. New episodes premiere every Friday up through the Season 2 finale on Oct. 30.
