Asda becomes first UK supermarket to make change at petrol stations amid fuel crisis
Asda has become the first UK supermarket to offer cheaper fuel at its garages as the petrol and diesel crisis in the UK continues, threatening to get out of control.
Asda, which is rivalled by Sainsbury’s and Tesco, as well as Morrisons, has announced it is bringing back its popular fuel saving offer, becoming the first retailer to act. It will hand Asda Rewards customers the chance to save 5p per litre on fuel when they spend £40 or more in store.
Customers who spend £40 or more in a single in-store transaction between 23 September and 14 October will receive a 5p-per-litre fuel coupon in their Asda Rewards app, redeemable on a single fuel purchase until 31 October at participating Asda filling sites.

The offer could save driver up to £3 each time they fill up a typical 60-litre family car and is available at 262 participating Asda and Asda Express sites offering Asda-branded fuel, the supermarket says.
The move comes as national average diesel prices reach 196.1p per litre, approaching the record high of 199.1p set in July 2022.
Meanwhile, petrol prices have also risen to 172.4p per litre. Rachel Eyre, Chief Customer Officer at Asda, said: “The weekly shop and the cost of filling up the car are two of the biggest everyday expenses for many households.
“Customers told us how much they valued this Rewards offer when we ran it earlier this year.
“We’re pleased to bring it back as part of our continued investment to help keep the cost of feeding and fuelling the family down.”
Luke Bosdet, road fuel price spokesman for the AA, said: “Every 6p increase in the pump price of fuel includes an extra penny in VAT for the Treasury.
“Petrol currently averages around 172p a litre, with diesel above 196p. This time last year, they averaged 135p and 142p respectively.
“The extra 37p on petrol therefore includes a 6p-a-litre boost to VAT receipts, while diesel adds 9p a litre to the tax haul.”
