What can Marvel fans expect from Avengers: Doomsday?
As expected, the folks behind the monumental, multiverse-spanning blockbuster are keeping their lips sealed until its Dec. 18 release date. Not even founding Marvel Studios Chairman David Maisel could say much while speaking with E! News at the opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
Marvel Studios Chairman Teases “Amazing” Avengers: Doomsday
“It’s gonna be amazing,” he teased. “The team there, led by Kevin Feige, has done a great job. And I think all of us fans—including myself—are in for a treat.”
Feige, who has led the charge since Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk landed on the scene almost two decades ago, serves as producer on Doomsday along with Louis D’Esposito and Jonathan Schwartz.
Maisel also credited George Lucas with inspiring the interconnected world of comic book movies that have become the single highest-grossing film franchise on the planet with over $30 billion in global ticket sales.
“It was Star Wars that I fell in love with,” he shared. “[It] caused me wanting to do a universe, which became the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If George didn’t do all of this stuff, there might not be an MCU.”
Doomsday, of course, marks the return of Infinity War and Endgame directors, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, who convinced Iron Man alum Robert Downey Jr. to come back into the fold—this time as the dreaded Doctor Doom. Feige himself described the character as the “proto-villain for all supervillains” while speaking to ScreenSlam at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
“Was Darth Vader inspired by Doctor Doom? Maybe,” he mused. “It’s not just the iconic look and iconic mask…but it is who he is inside. It’s who Victor is. His flaws, his hubris, his genius, his warmth and his true belief that he is the hero and will save us all. That’s what is fascinating about him and that’s why I’m excited about having Robert Downey play him and bring him into Doomsday.”

The film will be preceded by encore showings of Avengers: Endgame, which feature an exclusive look at Doomsday.
Doomsday follow-up Avengers: Secret Wars is set to open Dec. 17, 2027.
