A brand new Indian street food restaurant is set to open in Swansea a couple of doors down from its award-winning counterpart.
Raj Chowdhury opened Raj Kitchen at Castle Street in Swansea city centre in 2024, having moved over from the Docker’s Club where he had first served up food. And the business has gone from strength to strength, with the restaurant winning awards for the quality of its food offerings.
More recently, it has received a nomination in the AFRA awards, which will soon have an awards ceremony in London.
And now, the business is opening a second venue, a few doors down from Raj Kitchen, called Street. The concept is the dream of Enakshi Chowdhury, Raj’s wife, who will be leading the new concept. It will be a sit-down restaurant with a menu totally centred around street food, inspired by Raj’s home in Kolkata and across south east Asia. Mr Chowdhury told WalesOnline: “Street will be run by my wife, Enakshi. There will be no rice, or curries, or anything like that there. It is totally based on street food, which I think Swansea doesn’t have.
“Why we’ve called it Street, is because it’s not just Indian street food, it’s street food from all over south east Asia, and we’ll even be selling things like chicken tikka burritos, and my favourite, well-known burgers, the Dhamaka burger.”
Mr Chowdhury explained the price has been set to be affordable for all.
He said: “The price range won’t be big, it will probably be around £12, and if you’re coming in groups, it can even go down to around £10 or £11.”
Street, at Castle Street in Swansea, officially opens to the public on Wednesday, October 7. It will be open from 11am until 3pm and 5pm until 9.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
Speaking ahead of the official opening of the business, Mr Chowdhury said: “It’s a nice milestone. Nobody has got this proper street-food orientated joint, and we want to make it strictly to that point, with no rice, no curries or anything. It will be all street food.
“And my main criteria going forward at Raj’s Kitchen is to go for a rosette, and I want to do that for next year.”
