As the latest series of Vigil continues to leave fans on tenterhooks, the creator of the BBC show has opened up on whether there will be more to come.
The creator of BBC’s drama Vigil has shared whether there will be a fourth series.
Season 3 is now nearing its conclusion, with the penultimate episode airing on BBC One tonight (September 13) ahead of the final instalment next weekend. The BBC drama, starring Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie, first arrived on screens in 2021 before returning for a second series in 2023.
Three years on, the series has taken the pair’s characters to Svalbard. The story has also introduced a fresh cast of characters and an entirely new investigation.
Although each series of Vigil has largely told its own self-contained story, the format leaves plenty of scope for Amy and Kirsten to face another case in the future. And creator Tom Edge has now spoken about whether viewers could see the duo return for a fourth series.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Edge was asked if there was more in store for avid viewers. He explained: “Regrettably, the world remains complicated and finds new ways to evolve towards instability, danger and the rest. So I don’t think we would ever find ourselves short of stories.”
However, the creator suggested that season three could also mark a natural ending point for the wider story that has unfolded across the three series. He added: “I think certainly this time around, we put the show in a place where we feel that this arc across three seasons has been settled.”
The screenwriter went on to stress that there is no pressure for Vigil to return on a regular schedule. He added: “I think we will see how it goes. But one of the pleasures of the show is it doesn’t feel like it is a show that has to return on an annual ticking clock basis.
“So I think we can leave it open, but certainly for this season, it felt like it was the culmination of a bunch of questions that we’ve asked across three seasons. I was happy to take it to that point.”
Leading actresses Suranne and Rose are not the only familiar faces to have remained with the drama throughout its run. Gary Lewis, who plays Colin Robertson, and Orla Russell, who portrays Poppy, Amy’s adopted daughter from a previous relationship, have also appeared across all three seasons.
Away from Vigil, Edge has worked on a number of major television projects, with writing credits including Lovesick, The Crown and Strike.
