Ben Shelton is being brutally honest about how the demands of his and girlfriend Trinity Rodman‘s sporting careers make finding time together a challenge.
During this past summer, Ben was a runner-up in the US Open men’s final and he told Us Weekly that staying so busy makes it hard to find quality time to spend with Trinity, who is also an accomplished athlete.
“It is really difficult,” he told the outlet. “I think what a lot of people don’t see is when we actually do have time or a couple of days off, we’re so exhausted that it’s tough to do anything. It is tough to make time.”
Trinity is a forward for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League.
Ben admitted that sometimes when he leaves his tournaments, he feels like “a bit of a zombie” and not the “most fun person to be around.”
He continued, “But we make a lot of sacrifices for our sport. I’d say both of us are chasing things for our sport. We’re not where we want to be yet, we’re not in our primes. So this is kind of crunch time.”
The top-ranked tennis pro further revealed that what’s coming up is “going to be the hardest, most grueling time in our relationship,” and none of it will “be easy.”
“But being able to have someone to lean on who’s such an elite athlete and doing things at a really high level as well, it helps in so many ways,” Ben added.
Trinity previously revealed the message she sent to start their romance.
Trinity was very supportive of her boyfriend during his US Open journey in New York, which kicked off in the middle of her own busy schedule.
Ben expressed his gratitude for his girlfriend, who he says “grinded a ridiculous amount” to show up for him and probably flew back and forth “six or seven times during the tournament,” possibly even more than that.
