Bethlehem Kudumba Unit

Story

Justin (Nivin Pauly) is bachelor who runs a catering business. His life changes when a new family moves into his neighbourhood. Ashley (Mamitha Baiju), a college student from the family, gradually becomes close to Justin and falls in love with him despite their age difference. Justin initially resists but eventually reciprocates her feelings. The rest of the film revolves around their efforts to win over their families and get married.

Analysis

“Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” (Telugu dubbed version) is a delightful rom-com that delivers clean, situational comedy and keeps the entertainment quotient high for most of its runtime. Director Girish AD (previous film is Premalu) once again proves his strength in creating natural humour from everyday situations. Several sequences, particularly in the first half, generate genuine laughs.

The film also benefits greatly from Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju. Nivin is convincing as a ‘age-bar’ bachelor dealing with his emotions and the complications surrounding his relationship. Mamitha is effortless in her role, and her cute, natural performance complements Nivin perfectly. Their chemisry is easily one of the film’s biggest strengths.

The film does try to go beyond comedy and add emotional depth to the story. However, it also suffers from convenient writing. The pace slows down in places, and some subplots feel unnecessary. The climax is also slightly stretched and could have been sharper.

Vishnu Vijay’s music suits the mood, while Ajmal Sabu’s cinematography beautifully captures the scenic locations. The editing works well in the first half but could have been tighter later on.

Bottomline

“Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” is a neat and enjoyable rom-com powered by good humour, relatable situations and the wonderful chemistry between Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju. The second half could have been trimmed and the emotional portions handled better, but the film remains a pleasant watch. A light-hearted romance!

Rating: 2.75/5
