Blumhouse’s Forgotten Legacy Sequel to 30-Year-Old Horror Hit Now Streaming for Free

Every major streaming service has added many new horror additions for the month of October, and for those who don’t have any paid subscriptions, there are also plenty of free options. One title that can be watched for free is the legacy sequel to The Craft, which has largely been forgotten in the six years since its release.

The Craft: Legacy was added to Tubi’s free streaming library at the start of the month. It’s also available to watch for free with ad support on YouTube. The sequel was released at the start of the pandemic era in 2020, showing in only very limited theaters while dropping on VOD on the same day. Given the circumstances, it only made $2.3 million and was missed by many horror fans, even those who may love the original film. With its availability on free streaming, there’s no better time to give it a try.

Zoe Lister-Jones wrote and directed The Craft: Legacy. The film follows four teenage girls practicing witchcraft as a coven, played by Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), Gideon Adlon (Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord), Lovie Simone (Greenleaf), and Zoey Luna (Dear Evan Hansen). Other stars include Michelle Monaghan (Patriots Day), Nicholas Galitzine (Masters of the Universe), and David Duchovny (The X-Files).

The film is a follow-up to The Craft, but it follows an original cast of characters. It similarly follows a core group of four teen girls, but it is set in the same universe as the first movie. The story picks up with Lily (Spaeny) moving to a new town where she meets a group of three girls looking for a fourth to complete their coven. That’s when they discover that Lily actually has magical abilities, and when she joins the group, the girls become increasingly powerful.

For the sake of avoiding spoilers for those who haven’t watched the film, no specific names will be given here. However, there is a special cameo in The Craft: Legacy that directly ties the sequel to the original movie. The screen time is brief, but it’s a significant appearance, as it does play directly into the plot of the sequel. Director Zoe Lister-Jones has said she wrote the script in a way to leave the door open for a continuation, but no new film has since materialized.

Critics were pretty split on The Craft: Legacy. It holds a mixed approval rating of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some viewers say it’s underrated, so it’s not without its fans. As one Rotten Tomatoes audience review stated, “I loved the original movie and this was an excellent sequel with a good story in fitting with the original. I would love to see a third in the series.”

The Craft: Legacy is streaming on Tubi and YouTube. The original film is currently on HBO Max, but will also be added to Tubi on Nov. 1.
