Bungie admits Marathon “did not reach as many players as we had hoped,” shares plans to evolve the game for “a sustainable future” while committing to Destiny

Bungie has now issued a studio update after Destiny 2 shut down this summer and triggered a massive wave of layoffs, and it requires help from Marathon. The sci-fi shooter saw middling reception despite strong reviews when it launched in March. Bungie knows it, but it deserves to be saved – for the sake of Bungie’s live-service games and the developer itself.

Acknowledging that the game “did not reach as many players as we had hoped,” Bungie insists it will push Marathon through “evolution” in a new blog post and matching YouTube video you can watch above. Mainly, the developer wants to break down some of Marathon’s genre constraints to give it wider appeal as a survival experience.
