Bury Market’s new food hall will open in time for the festive period.

The new flexi-hall is expected to be up and running at the end of November, giving Christmas shoppers a new space to eat, drink and watch performances. Work on the £33m venue is ongoing, but it will ultimately boast 12 food and retail units.

It will also have a central bar and stage offering live entertainment to visitors to the town’s world famous market, Bury council has previously said. The building’s name, Casewells, refers to the first shop in Bury said to have sold black pudding.

While an official announcement is still to be made by the council, the Local Democracy Reporting Service can reveal the grand opening of the new food hall is expected to be Thursday, November 26.

Announcements have not yet been made regarding which businesses will be occupying the space with the council on the lookout for local operators to take up residency. Bury council has previously said it hopes the space will increase footfall into the town centre and enhance the local food offering.

Plans for the flexi-hall were first revealed back in 2021 after the market was granted the maximum grant allowed under the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. When it opens, it will be run by Midlands Events Bury Ltd (MEB), who are also behind the Queens Market in Rhyl.

Councillor Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for regeneration and growth at Bury council, previously said: “Casewells reflects the approach we’re taking across the borough. We’re not simply delivering new buildings. We’re creating places that people use, enjoy and feel connected to.

“Bury is delivering regeneration at pace, but growth here builds on identity. The things that make our towns distinctive matter, and Casewells is a good example of that approach. It draws on Bury’s heritage while creating new opportunities for people to come together, support local businesses and spend time in the town centre.”

Bury market sees more than 150,000 visitors each week, with people travelling from across the UK and beyond to shop there. In May, it was named a Traveller’s Choice destination by TripAdvisor.

The award, which is determined by reviews and ratings from visitors, puts it in the top 10pc of tourist attractions in the world.
