Nearly eight years later, Cody Fern is looking back on his time on Netflix’s final season of House of Cards, amid the firing of Kevin Spacey.
While discussing his feature directorial debut Closing Night at TIFF, the actor recalled playing “the main villain” on the sixth and final season, before “the nuclear bomb hit” the show with sexual misconduct allegations coming out against Spacey.
“I was in House of Cards,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I was cast as the main villain of Season 6, playing a Jared Kushner type.”
Fern continued, “Oh yeah, we filmed for a couple of months, and then the nuclear bomb hit. Then I got to come back and work on Robin Wright’s season, and I was a wonderful wallflower. So I got to have the pre- and post-[Spacey] experience, and I’ve got some wild stories.”
After House of Cards was renewed for Season 6 in 2017, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making a sexual advance on him at a party in 1986 when Rapp was 14. Spacey became the subject of allegations from 15 others, including eight people who worked on the Netflix political drama.
The streamer subsequently dropped Spacey from the starring role of Frank Underwood, announcing that Robin Wright would lead the final season as Frank’s widow Claire Underwood.
Spacey was found not liable in Rapp’s case, and he has never been found guilty on any charges relating to sexual misconduct, all of which he has denied.
