Coronado Island Film Festival to Open With I Play Rocky, Close With Paper Tiger

The Coronado Island Film Festival unveiled a splashy lineup of films for its 11th year, with Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky opening the festival and James Gray’s Paper Tiger closing it. Between them are 140 films of all genres from around the world.

The festival, on the island near San Diego that has a long history as a backdrop for Hollywood icons from Marilyn Monroe to Tom Cruise, will also feature Ink, The Debut, Behemoth!, Clarissa, Killing Castro, Minotaur, Ray Gunn, Jimmy, Josephine, and Tangles.

Additional highlights will include the annual Leonard Maltin Industry Tribute Gala, with honorees to be announced. The gala, which is always a highlight of the festival, features the beloved critic conducting short talks with honorees both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Last year’s edition included Beau Bridges and Delroy Lindo.

In a nod to the island’s long Hollywood history, the festival will also host a tribute to silent film pioneer Harold Lloyd. The schedule will also feature a slate of female-directed selections, including including All That Glisters, All My Friends Are Back in Brisbane, and Kenny Loggins: Conviction of the Heart, among others.

Loggins has a special connection with the island: He performed two songs for Cruise’s Top Gun, which shot in several Coronado Island locales.

The festival will also feature the Conservation & Science of Possibilities program, the Culinary Cinema Series including doc Top of the World, and an industry panel series spotlighting casting, screenwriting, and the business of film.

The festival will also celebrate independent filmmakers and screenwriters at the annual Jury Awards presentation, held Saturday, Nov. 7, that will feature $20,000 in cash prizes awarded to emerging and visionary voices.

You can learn more about the festival — one of MovieMaker‘s 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee — at the festival’s website. And MovieMaker will be in attendance, and presenting one of the panels, State of the Industry: Navigating a New Era.
