Teen drama about a rowing fanatic forced to start again after a family scandal

When her father’s dodgy financial dealings are exposed, Teagan (Miku Martineau) is forced to move back to her mother’s home town. Not only does this involve her switching schools and starting again in what feels like a piranha pool of privilege, but Teagan finds that opportunities to pursue her love of rowing are few and far between. Can she teach the arrogant local male team a thing or two?
This isn’t Martineau’s first time around the block playing an outsider in a Netflix teen drama. She’s also the lead in the violent boarding school series Bet, but Crew Girl is a far more traditional teen proposition, following Teagan as she looks for things to hold on to in a new life that’s very much outside her comfort zone. Martineau does both well, and the physicality she has in Bet serves her well on the water here.
The story also unfolds partly from the point of view of her mum (Mad Men’s Jessica Paré), who never wanted to move back to her old hometown in the first place. (Eight episodes)
