Much like his old Saddle Creek labelmate Conor Oberst, longtime Cursive frontman Tim Kasher is a director now. A couple of years ago, Kasher made his directorial debut with an independent found-footage horror feature called Who’s Watching. I haven’t seen it yet, but you can imagine that a film about a creepy, obsessive stalker might have certain resonance with some of Kasher’s lyrics. Kasher also did the music for Who’s Watching, and a soundtrack album is coming next month. Today, Cursive share the new song that they recorded for the movie.
Lately, Tim Kasher has been exhibiting Who’s Watching around, playing Cursive songs in acoustic mini-sets at the screenings. The film just came out digitally and in limited theatrical release. Cursive’s new song “Wounded Animal,” their first since the 2024 album Devourer, sounds like classic Cursive and builds on Kasher’s instrumental themes on the score. (Kasher’s solo project home phone also released the new album Sponges Of Experience earlier this year.)
Some of the tracks on the Who’s Watching soundtrack come from a fictional metal band called Toxic Cock Syndrome — amazing name — that also includes Jonah Ray, Josh Etheir, and Radkey’s Isaiah Radke and Darrion Lewis. Kasher plays guitar and sings backup on those Toxic Cock Syndrome recordings. Below, check out “Wounded Animal” and the Who’s Watching trailer.
