Daniel Craig’s Netflix Fantasy Epic Reboot Is Already Breaking Streaming Records

Netflix has steadily escalated its production spending over the years, shattering previous streaming records by pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into star-studded spectacles and sprawling action epics. This boundary-pushing strategy has allowed the platform to directly rival major Hollywood studios in scale, scope, and sheer star power, and now it is poised to culminate in the company’s most ambitious fantasy endeavor yet. Spearheaded by an acclaimed director and a powerhouse ensemble cast led by Daniel Craig, this highly anticipated project is widely touted as a cinematic game-changer that is already rewriting the rules of Netflix and breaking streaming records ahead of its global debut on the platform in April 2027.

To date, Netflix’s most expensive venture was the Russo brothers’ sci-fi adventure The Electric State, which ballooned to a record-shattering $320 million. Its massive price tag positioned it ahead of Martin Scorsese’s $225 million crime caper The Irishman, as well as the $200 million action blockbusters Red Notice and The Gray Man. These projects served as a prelude to the streamer’s next big gamble: Greta Gerwig’s prestige adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The scale of the project was recently illuminated by the film’s Director of Photography, Seamus McGarvey, who casually revealed during a podcast that the production carries a staggering $280 million production budget (hat tip to World of Reel).

The upcoming Narnia adaptation is breaking internal records not just through its cost, which pegs it as one of Netflix’s most expensive films ever made and a record-breaking expenditure for a fantasy epic (with reshoots reportedly underway), but also as the streaming juggernaut’s first ever title to secure an exclusive 45-day worldwide theatrical and IMAX rollout before it ever lands on the streaming platform. It seems that Netflix is sparing no expense on the lavishly mounted literary reboot, which reportedly trails only The Electric State in terms of its cost, and the company is no doubt aiming to recoup its financial investment through its theatrical release – which is slated for Feb. 12, 2027, before later debuting on Netflix on Apr. 2, 2027.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is bolstered by a significant creative pedigree. As her highly anticipated follow-up to Barbie, Gerwig has assembled an elite ensemble to bring the story to screen, with Craig headlining the massive production alongside Meryl Streep, Emma Mackey and Carey Mulligan. The all-star cast will tackle the definitive origins of the magical realm, adapting the 1955 prequel novel by legendary author C.S. Lewis. Fans can expect a whimsical yet high-stakes adventure tracking the creation of Narnia, as two children stumble upon the mysterious wood between the worlds and accidentally awaken an ancient evil.

Gerwig is trading the neon pink of Barbieland for the lush, green, uncharted forests of a brand-new universe that could very well serve as the foundation for a new multi-film fantasy empire at Netflix. The streaming giant is already said to be thinking far beyond a singular trip to Narnia, with reports revealing plans to potentially expand the modern take on Lewis’ world into a colossal, eight-film franchise. Therefore, it is critical that the first movie hits the ground running and strikes the perfect chord with audiences, as it could actively be laying the groundwork for a decade-spanning saga to anchor the platform’s long-term fantasy future.
