Suriya-starrer “Vishwanath and Sons” has taken a good start at the box office. The film received a positive response from audiences and decent reviews, with critics largely praising its family-friendly entertainment, Suriya’s charismatic performance and Maitha Baiju’s chirpy act. The second half, however, was considered a weak link by several critics.
Despite the mixed feedback on the latter portion, the film has managed to generate largely positive word of mouth.
The opening is particularly noteworthy considering Suriya delivered the mass blockbuster “Karuppu” just three months ago. It is usually challenging for a star to immediately follow a mass entertainer with a class-oriented family drama and still bring audiences to theatres. Suriya, however, has managed to pull off a strong opening for Vishwanath and Sons.
On Day 1, the film collected Rs 17.51 crore gross in India. The overseas markets contributed another Rs 14 crore gross, taking the film’s worldwide Day 1 gross to Rs 31.51 crore.
The film has also shown strong traction in the Telugu states. Although “Vishwanath and Sons” is primarily a Tamil film and was dubbed into Telugu, it reportedly collected around Rs 7 crore gross from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on its opening day.
Directed by Venky Atluri and produced by Naga Vamsi, “Vishwanath and Sons” has therefore opened on a healthy note. The key now will be whether the positive word of mouth helps the film maintain its momentum through the weekend.
