Fans aren’t ready to say goodbye to Sweet Magnolias, and neither is series star JoAnna Garcia Swisher.
On Friday, it was revealed that Netflix had canceled the romantic drama after five seasons. The move came after a drop in viewership for season 5, Deadline reported, along with the fact that Swisher and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson were developing another show, Ladies of the House.

While Swisher has other projects in the works, the end of Sweet Magnolias is bittersweet.
“How do you say goodbye to something that became so much more than a job? Seven years. Five seasons. A million tiny moments that somehow became a whole life,” the actor, who played Maggie Townsend, wrote on Instagram.
Swisher shared that she joined Sweet Magnolias – which is based on a book series by Sherryl Woods – at a difficult time in her life.
“I lost both of my parents during those early seasons, and in a time when I wasn’t always sure how to keep moving forward, Serenity gave me somewhere to go. These people gave me somewhere to belong,” she wrote, adding that the people involved with the series showed up for her “again and again and again.”
“To every single person who made this show, and every single person who watched it, loved it, shared it, and found a little piece of themselves in Serenity…thank you … Five seasons. Seven years. One really, really beautiful chapter of my life.” she continued. “I’m not quite sure I’m ready to close it. But I am so incredibly grateful I got to live it.”
Fans beg Netflix for ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 6
While Sweet Magnolias Season 5 did not end on a major cliffhanger (like season 1’s infamous car crash), it did leave some storyline unresolved, particularly around Dana Sue’s (Brooke Elliott) marriage to Ronnie (Brandon Quinn). Understandably, fans want answers about what’s next for the pair, as well as the rest of Serenity’s residents. Many pleaded with Netflix to commit to an additional seasons, or even just a few more episodes, in order to tie up loose ends and give the Magnolias a proper send off.
“[Netflix] you keep canceling the best shows,” one person wrote on Instagram. “At least one more season to close everything out!”
“Netflix needs to have a 2 hour special or a 6th season to let us say good bye to this beloved show,” another wrote.
“Netflix needs to do them right and have finale episode for closure!” someone else argued.
Sweet Magnolias Seasons 1-5 are streaming on Netflix.
