Along with Coco 2, Frozen III and The Incredibles 3, Disney is also bringing us Zootopia 3. More on that below.
Disney held their annual D23 expo which was naturally full of big news and announcements. We got a new look at Avengers: Doomsday, our very first looks at Coco 2 and The Incredibles 3 as well and a confirmation on Marvel’s new X Men cast.
We also got the confirmation that Disney is working on Zootopia 3, which will likely go by the title Zootropolis 3 around these parts of the world like the previous films. This doesn’t exactly come as a surprise considering Zootopia 2, released just last year, was one of the biggest box office hits of the year, bringing in $1.87 billion globally. In fact, the film became Disney’s best performing animation of all time, so, naturally, Disney has moved forward with another film very quickly.
The short teaser shown at the expo hinted that the third film will heavily involve birds causing more mayhem in the city of Zootopia. Of course, the ending of the second film did already hint at this with a single feather floating down from the sky.
Ginnifer Goodwin, who voices Judy Hopps, and Ke Huy Quan, the voice of Gary DeSnake, took the stage to announce the film. Jason Bateman didn’t join them but he’ll be directing the film as well as presumably returning to voice Nick Wilde. Although, Goowin and Quan only mentioned that “the bunny and the snake will be back”, but it would be difficult to imagine a Zootopia film without Bateman’s sly fox. Bateman is currently filming The Cackling Of The Dodos, his third feature film as a director, but Zootopia 3 will be his first animated film in the director’s chair.
Although Disney is relying more and more on sequels, we did get the announcement of a brand new, original Pixar film, Ghost Market. The film will be the studio’s first ghost story and is set to be released in 2028. There’s also Disney’s Clay, an original animation featuring the voice of Kieran Culkin as a grumpy mentor to a young ball of clay.
There was also a new trailer and extended look at Gatto, which is hitting cinemas in March 2027 and this year’s Hexed also got a new look. Apart from blurry footage filmed from the audience, none of these seem to be online yet, but hopefully we’ll get to watch these soon.
