The first woman who won Big Brother looks almost unrecognisable 24 years after her history-making victory.
Before the iconic reality show found its feet at ITV, it had originally launched on Channel 4 in 2000 before making the switch to Channel 5 in 2011. Kate Lawler entered the house during its third series in 2002 and went to become the first woman to lift the BB crown.
Just 22 years old at the time, Kate has confessed that the gameshow completely changed her life. Speaking at the latest ITV season’s launch, she said: “The last time I was at a launch night it was the night I went in.
“I didn’t have a clue. £100 in the bank and I had no idea. And I won! And then my life changed, it was great. I feel very nostalgic.” Now aged 46, fans may find it hard to recognise the Channel 4 champion.”
Though her trademark smile is still easy to spot, Kate looks a world apart from the contestant who first captured the nation’s hearts. The London-born star didn’t fade into obscurity after winning the show, carving out a successful career presenting on Capital FM and Virgin Radio.
But she has now returned to her roots as the co-host of Big Brother’s new companion podcast, The Group Chat. It airs every night directly after Big Brother and offers fans a space to discuss the most dramatic moments from the episode, alongside ex-housemate Kate and fellow reality star GK Barry.
A synopsis for the series teases: “Big Brother: The Group Chat will give fans even more action, bringing them closer to the personalities, dynamics and relationships at the heart of the series.
“With exclusive interviews with evicted Housemates, celebrity fans and special guests, viewers can expect strong opinions, plenty of personality and the inside scoop from those who know the house best.”
It continues: “From the biggest moments to the hot topics sparking conversation, Kate and GK will be on hand to dissect the drama, celebrate the stand-out scenes and weigh in on the decisions and surprises shaping the game.
“Whether it’s an unexpected shake-up, an unlikely alliance or a moment that has everyone talking, Big Brother: The Group Chat will be the place to continue the conversation.”
Hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best welcomed 16 new contestants into the house on Sunday (September 13) and one will be sent packing by the end of this week.
The three housemates at risk of eviction are bartender Millie, carer Pauline and housewife Rochelle. The trio were nominated by Big Brother’s hidden spy Tays, who joined as a fake participant in charge of sparking chaos in the opening week of the series.
