Four Rivers Six Ranges Brings Forgotten Tibetan Resistance to Screen

Four Rivers Six Ranges, directed by Tibetan filmmaker Shenpenn Khymsar, revisits the Chushi Gangdruk resistance and its role in protecting the Dalai Lama during his 1959 escape from Tibet to India. The historical action drama focuses on ordinary Tibetans who joined the armed resistance, bringing a lesser known chapter of Tibetan history to audiences.

The film was shot covertly in Nepal’s Mustang region, where the resistance historically operated. Khymsar reportedly obtained permissions using the dummy title The Himalayan Robin Hood and compressed a planned 45 day schedule into just 19 days because of surveillance concerns. Much of the cast consisted of first time performers selected through social media.

Four Rivers Six Ranges premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam before reaching Indian theatres. Reports say its India release, initially planned for September 11, was postponed to September 18 around Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit for the BRICS summit. PVR INOX confirmed the postponement but did not provide specific information about alleged government pressure.

The film has also renewed attention on Tibet as India and China work to stabilize bilateral ties. Its story intersects with continuing debates over Tibetan identity and the Dalai Lama’s succession. The 91 year old spiritual leader has said the institution will continue, while Beijing maintains that it has a role in recognizing his successor.
