Twenty-five years after al Qaeda militants carried out the September 11 attacks in the United States, the organisation founded by Osama bin Laden has been weakened by the deaths of its top leaders and the rise of Islamic State, but its affiliates continue to operate and expand their influence in parts of Africa and South Asia.
