Sheridan Smith makes a mess of being an adult

Year: 2006-2009

Writer Susan Nickson’s follow-up to Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps gives Sheridan Smith another role as a scrappy, this time slightly older twentysomething who is not exactly nailing the role of grown up. Smith’s Michelle is a 27-year-old nutritionist who, despite her job, dines on junk food and drinks copiously. Indeed there’s nothing healthy about her lifestyle, which also includes living in a mess and sleeping around.

After one of her one-night stands (The Handmaid’s Tale’s O-T Fagbenle) sticks around for more than one night, Michelle toys with the idea of acting more responsibly – but it would be a boring show if she succeeded. And if you think Michelle is bad, she’s got nothing on her brother Mike (Upstart Crow’s Rob Rouse). Michelle does improve over the show’s three-series run, which means you see some growth, and Smith is an entertaining, endearing watch. (Three series)
