After years of keeping their cards very close to their chests, Rockstar have finally decided to break cover and let us know exactly what we’re going to be getting with the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The Netflix reveal was obviously the biggest part of that, giving us a full look at gameplay for the first time, but it’s clear they aren’t going to stop there either.
Specifically, different media organizations have finally been given access to senior developers and figures within the company to ask questions that dive a little deeper into their thinking. Now, the latest of those interviews is now live, and it gives us a little window into what we might expect from the game’s Bonnie and Clyde-esque story.
As first reported by GTA Boom, Love Magazine recently published their latest interview, in which they sat down with Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, narrative senior vice president Rupert Humphries, and writers Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern and Alexa D’Agostino to discuss everything that has gone into the game’s protagonists and story.
As part of that, we got a much better look at both Jason and Lucia’s story, as well as their criminal mentor Raul.
“We didn’t want to make any kind of statement with Jason’s backstory,” Humphries said. “It needs to be understood that he takes the measures he does — drug trafficking and becoming a bank robber, etc. — because of his circumstances. But a lot of this is up to the player to decide whether he needs to do that, or if it’s a choice he makes because he’s wired differently to other people.”
On Lucia, D’Agostino shared some insight into the background of the character, saying, “When it came to writing Lucia, I thought of the women I know — my mother was an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, close to Lucia’s hometown of Liberty City. I thought about the way she raised me: rowdy, kind, but not to take any s**t. I related a lot to Lucia and writing her came very naturally to me. There are many badass women like her, just as there are many men like Jason. We just focused on capturing that.”
On Raul, it seems as though he’ll be playing a troublesome form of mentor to our two protagonists, as Humphries goes on to explain:
“Something we felt strongly about with a Bonnie and Clyde-style narrative was that it’s a story about young people—they couldn’t be too experienced, or jaded. There is something hopeful and naive about going on the run and pushing a crime spree to its limit without worrying about the consequences. With that in mind, we needed an older mentor character to bring them into the large-scale heists and set pieces that you expect in a big action crime saga like this. We also wanted a character to embody Vice City, and bring a knowing Miami-cool into the game. Raul embodies all the local and criminal knowledge that Jason and Lucia don’t have when they get to Vice City.”
Grand Theft Auto VI’s big release day is closer than ever, and we can expect to see more information emerging ahead of the big day in November. Let’s just hope it manages to live up to the unprecedented amount of expectation that has built up over the last few years, or who knows how the community as a whole will respond.
