H-1B Families Trapped Between Jobs and EMIs

For many Indian-origin NRIs in the US, the COVID years appeared to be a period of unprecedented opportunity. With lockdowns in place at the time, some H-1B professionals took on multiple jobs, sometimes working two or even three roles simultaneously.

The additional income encouraged some families to invest in two or three houses, making substantial down payments and financing the rest through mortgages.

But the assumption that the good times would continue forever has now come back to haunt some of them.

The economic reality has changed sharply. Holding on to even one job is becoming increasingly difficult for some H-1B workers amid layoffs, tighter hiring and uncertainty surrounding immigration policies.

At the same time, selling properties has become a major challenge. A housing market that once appeared to be a safe investment is no longer providing an easy exit.

The rental market is also adding to the pressure. Some homeowners are struggling to find tenants, while immigration uncertainty and changing attitudes toward immigrants are making the situation even more difficult in certain communities.

For families carrying multiple mortgages, the absence of rental income can quickly turn an investment into a financial burden.

Many are now caught in a difficult situation: they cannot comfortably sell their homes, they cannot depend on rental income, and they must continue paying monthly EMIs even when their employment situation itself is uncertain.

Adding another layer of anxiety is the continuing uncertainty surrounding employment authorization for H-4 spouses. Any restrictions or changes affecting H-4 EAD holders could directly impact families that depend on a second income to manage mortgages and household expenses.

The result is a growing financial squeeze for some H-1B families — fewer job opportunities, uncertain immigration prospects, difficult-to-sell properties and mounting mortgage payments.

What once looked like financial security during the pandemic boom has, for some, turned into a trap that is becoming increasingly difficult to escape.
