What’s “Happy Journey” About?
A travel agency owner takes a group of women on a free Europe tour, hoping the trip will help his agency get good ratings. The women selected for the trip are Chamundeswari (Aamani), a minister’s wife; Sarilatha (Jhansi) and her daughter Tanvi (Payal Radhakrishna); Naina (Jinisha); Divya (Sunaina); Vihana (Roopa); and Savitri (Annapurna).
Will these random women bond during their journey? And will the trip bring about a change in their lives?
Analysis
The idea of taking a group of random women on a trip, with each of them dealing with age-related and personal issues and different personalities, while also going through an inward journey, is a good one, at least on paper. Such a concept needs strong writing, particularly well-developed characters, some good humour and emotional sequences.
However, the director of “Happy Journey” seems to have believed that simply bringing these women together and taking them to exotic, rich and beautiful locations would be enough to create the drama. Director Abhiram Naidu and the writer Hemant Dhome instead fill the film with random scenes and jokes to move the story forward. As a result, the narration meanders for most of the film without a clear goal.
Each of the women has her own issue. There is a grandmother who wants to enjoy life before her final journey, a mother trying to get her daughter married while the daughter struggles to connect with her fiancé who lives in Paris, a woman who has lost her husband, a divorced woman, an innocent minister’s wife and a young girl. However, their individual problems are not strong enough to create the required emotional impact or connect with the audience.
The second half becomes completely chaotic, while the message and preachy speeches make things even more tiresome.
The film has a few fun moments, but the director fails to build on them.
Veteran actors like Annapurna, Aamani and Jhansi do what is required of them. Payal Radhakrishna looks good on screen. Sunaina is also effective. Vamsi gets the central male role, but the comedian does not have much to work with.
The European locations have been captured well by the cinematographer, making the film visually appealing.
Bottom Line
Despite a neat idea, “Happy Journey” fails to turn its premise into a good trip. The journey ultimately feels tiring and bumpy.
