HBO is celebrating 25 years of one of its greatest achievements with Band of Brothers: Legacy, a new documentary that brings the cast back together to reflect on the making of the landmark World War II series and the real soldiers whose story inspired it.
The trailer has arrived ahead of the documentary’s September 9, 2026 premiere on HBO Max, and as a massive Band of Brothers fan, this is something I’m absolutely going to watch.
Originally titled D-Day to Today: A Band of Brothers Legacy, the documentary looks back at Band of Brothers, which premiered on HBO in September 2001 and remains one of the best WWII projects ever made.
This is a series I revisit often, and every time I watch it, I’m still in awe of how good it is. The performances, filmmaking, characters, scale, emotional weight, and respect shown to the men of Easy Company all come together in a way that few war movies or TV shows have matched.
The new documentary explores why the series connected so strongly with audiences when it premiered and why it continues to resonate 25 years later.
It also follows members of the cast as they retrace Easy Company’s journey, beginning at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, and traveling to Normandy, where they participate in a jump commemorating D-Day. From there, they head to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to meet today’s Easy Company soldiers.
The film features new interviews with Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, Michael Cudlitz, Dale Dye, David Schwimmer, and many others involved with the original series.
The official description reads: “This new tribute to the groundbreaking series that helped preserve the story of Easy Company and deepened public appreciation for the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation features new interviews with cast members…
“Through personal reflections and behind-the-scenes stories, participants revisit the experience of making the series and explore its lasting cultural resonance, and also includes never-before-seen archival footage and photographs of Easy Company and World War II.”
That combination of cast memories, previously unseen archival footage, photographs, and the journey back through Easy Company’s history should make this much more than a standard retrospective.
Band of Brothers: Legacy is directed by former Green Beret Chase Millsap, who previously directed the documentary Small Town Strong. The film comes from Playtone, with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman serving as executive producers.
Hanks and Playtone also continued exploring World War II with The Pacific in 2010 and Masters of the Air years later. Both are very good series in their own right, but for me, neither reaches the level of Band of Brothers.
There’s something about that original miniseries that continues to make it incredibly powerful no matter how many times you’ve seen it.
If you’ve somehow never watched Band of Brothers, this 25th anniversary is a pretty good excuse to finally experience it. If you’re already a fan, Band of Brothers: Legacy looks like the perfect reason to start another rewatch.
