We’ve officially reached that time of year when it’s no longer socially acceptable to wear gauzy sundresses and barely-there sandals, nor is it cold enough for fluffy fur coats and quilted puffer jackets. So, how does one approach this dressing challenge? Well, I’d suggest investing in transitional pieces that are seasonally appropriate and ideal for in-between temperatures—like a solid pair of Bermuda shorts.
Just a few weeks ago, you would’ve seen me wearing this cropped style with bikinis and flip-flops for pool hangouts and leisurely shoreside strolls. While there’s no doubt that this coveted shorts trend is a warm-weather staple, it can also work just as well for fall. With their knee-length hemline and roomy silhouette, Bermuda shorts offer the right amount of coverage without making you break a sweat. Plus, they’re incredibly versatile. Denim versions are perfect for laid-back occasions, while tailored alternatives suit more polished dress codes. So, whether you’re looking for a pair of Bermuda shorts for casual errand runs or formal office days, the styling options are endless.
Ahead, discover how I’m wearing these bottoms for autumn. I’ve shopped out each look for you, featuring some of my favorite brands like Sézane, J.Crew, and more. Copy these easy fall outfit formulas now, and you’ll find yourself wearing them on repeat for many seasons to come. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

While perusing Pinterest, I came across this relaxed outfit formula and I immediately added it to my rotation. I love the contrast between the lengthy trench coat and the cropped denim Bermuda shorts.
For my trench, I chose Sézane’s Clyde Coat, an absolute favorite among the fashion crowd—including us editors here at Marie Claire. The checkered lining gives the outfit a whimsical touch without overwhelming the look.
As for my Bermuda shorts, they’re from Agolde. They’re stitched with a high-rise waistline and a wide-leg construction, so they’re super comfortable and easy to move around in—which is a major plus for me. I can’t stand rigid denim bottoms that squeeze you in all the wrong places!
I grounded my look in a pair of Stuart Weitzman’s Lottie Penny Loafers styled with bright white socks. This loafers-and-socks combination is an It-girl-approved footwear formula that I’ve been wearing for the past few fall seasons. It’s a simple hack that can make any outfit feel a bit more dynamic.
Sweater + Button-Down + Tailored Bermuda Shorts + Slingbacks

If you’re searching for a sophisticated nine-to-five uniform, look no further. This outfit gets the job done—pun fully intended. To achieve this corporate-friendly ensemble, start off with a pair of tailored Bermuda shorts. They’re a great alternative for those moments when you’re not in the mood to wear floor-sweeping slacks.
Next, add layers with a sumptuous sweater and a crisp button-down shirt. I did just that with Uniqlo’s Soufflé Yarn Crew Neck and J.Crew’s Étienne Oversized Button-Up Shirt. I can’t tell you how many compliments I get whenever I style these pieces together. There’s something about the charcoal gray and cool blue color combination that feels undeniably elegant.
To really elevate the look, slip into sharp black slingbacks. They’re a timeless fall footwear essential that won’t go anywhere, so you might as well invest in them now.
Cardigan + Tank Top + White Bermuda Shorts + Ballet Flats

For those of you who believe that you can’t wear white after Labor Day, allow me to prove you wrong. Here, I’m wearing a set of Levi’s High Baggy Shorts coated in a brilliant shade of ivory. This outfit works for autumn because it has a fall-friendly twist. Instead of a linen shirt or tube top, I chose a navy cardigan with charming buttons down the front. I strategically layered this sweater over a tank top to make the look more visually appealing.
For my shoes, I decided on a pair of sweet Mary Janes from Mansur Gavriel, simply because they strike the perfect balance between comfort and style. I can’t seem to resist the square-toe silhouette and the dainty buckled strap.
