Hinckley takeaway closes for good blaming spiralling costs

One customer said the venue served ‘the best food around’

A takeaway restaurant in Hinckley has announced it has closed, blaming “spiralling” costs.

Prego, in Rugby Road, close to The Crescent, announced it had shut for good on Thursday, August 20.

After more than three decades in the industry, the business owner said that recent changes in government policy made it impossible to continue.

In a statement to its customers, the owners said: “It is with sadness that we have made the very difficult decision to permanently close the Prego business.

“With spiralling operational costs, energy, supply chain costs, and further recent changes in governmental policies, VAT, rises in NI contributions, and rises in the minimum wage, it is sadly impossible for us to continue operating in a healthy and sustainable way and keep up our high standards.

“Having been involved in the food industry for almost 30 years, the staggering changes that are impacting this industry are just so significant they are causing a catastrophic and irreversible change in the food industry.”

The UK Government’s Department for Business and Trade has defended the changes.

A Government spokesperson said: “While this is a commercial decision for Prego Events, we understand that this is a concerning time for workers and their families. A broad range of support is available for those affected.

“Our economy thrives when people have a wage they can count on, which is why we’ve raised the national living wage and national minimum wage, so the lowest-paid full-time workers are £900 better off.”

The owners added: “We thank all our fabulous, dedicated staff, past and present, who have worked so hard to help us keep our high standards and serve our local Hinckley and wider community.

“Most of all, we offer a huge thank you to every single one of you – our customers who have supported us and enjoyed our food over the years.

“Thank you for the funny stories, laughs, great conversations shared, and memories made.

“Thank you all so much.”

Customers responded to the news, with some saying they are gutted.

One customer said: “Had some amazing food from you guys, sad to hear this news. Wish you all the best in the future.”

A second added: “Gutted! It’s such a shame! They really need to do more for local businesses, especially hospitality.”

Someone else said: “Been a pleasure to be a customer for even just a small part of your journey… it’s a tough world out there; but wish you the best in whatever you choose to do next!!”

A fourth diner added: “Gutted. The best food around!”
