There’s just no getting around the fact that someone is going to have to point out that Robert Downey Jr.‘s Victor Von Doom looks just like Tony Stark in Avengers: Doomsday.
So, who is going to do it? If David Harbour is to be believed, Soviet holdover Alexei Shostakov (a.k.a. Red Guardian) will do the honors in what is sure to be classic moment of MCU irreverence.
Red Guardian May Have a Pivotal Scene in Avengers: Doomsday
Reciting a line of his character’s from Doomsday with zero context, the Stranger Things alum replied to Variety, “You…are Tony Stark.”
To be fair, it does sound like something the loud-mouthed New Avengers member would say. On the other hand, there is every possibility Harbour wanted to mess with fans. But if he was telling the truth, we’d bet anything that line considerably lightens the mood in an otherwise dramatic scene where Doctor Doom finally removes his mask.
Appearing at Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con last month, Downey Jr. described the transition from hero to villain as “daunting.”
“And when y’all had faith in me two years ago and lifted me up, I think we’ve done something real special,” he continued. “But decisions will have to be made. This time, you’re either on the side of the good guys or, perhaps, you may consider the alternative of joining the family of Doom.”
That last sentiment, prompting viewers to choose sides, was delivered in the vaguely European accent the actor chose for the dreaded antagonist, who hails from the fictional nation of Latveria.
When Does Avengers: Doomsday Come Out?
Marvel Studios will lay the groundwork for the multiverse-spanning blockbuster in the upcoming re-release of Avengers: Endgame, which contains never-before-seen footage. According to reports, however, that new material only comprises about four minutes of the 3-hour runtime. In addition, a newly-released trailer (watch below) seems to confirm the exclusive look at Doomsday will play at the very end as opposed to additional scenes being retroactively edited into the movie.

“That was the pinnacle, I think,” Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said of Endgame‘s massive cultural impact at SDCC. “The world’s a different place, but reminding all of us what it was like to be in that theatre together, cheering along, enjoying that crazy enthusiasm.”
