It’s one and done for Not Suitable for Work, the new comedy series created by Mindy Kaling (Velma, The Mindy Project). The series debuted its first season in June, but there will not be another, at least not on Hulu.
Variety has revealed that Hulu has canceled Not Suitable for Work after one season. At this time, Warner Bros. TV isn’t giving up on the comedy just yet, as the plan now is to shop the show to other potential homes. It remains to be seen if Netflix, Prime Video, or any other streamers are interested in picking it up. The odds are probably not in the show’s favor, however, given its polarizing reception, though it was technically a streaming success, so anything is possible.
Not Suitable for Work drew mixed reviews from critics, landing with a 54% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s certainly not stellar, but the good news is that audiences were largely much more appreciative of the series, giving it an 82% audience score. Its viewership was strong, as the show did make it to the No. 1 spot on Hulu’s Top 15 Today list following its premiere. It stayed on that list for over a month after its debut. The show also found high viewership in other territories on Disney+, reaching No. 1 in Australia, New Zealand, and other regions.
Described as a Friends-style sitcom, Not Suitable for Work is a workplace comedy series that focuses on five twentysomethings living in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood. The cast of characters includes AJ (Ella Hunt), an aspiring investment banker; Abby (Avantika Vandanapu), a celebrity stylist assistant; Davis (Will Angus), a finance employee; Josh (Jack Martin), a TV production assistant; and Kel (Nicholas Duvernay), an aspiring actor and former med school student.
