Sarah Paulson is not holding back about her least favorite season of American Horror Story.
The actor has appeared in 10 seasons of her longtime collaborator Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story, and played more than a dozen characters on the horror anthology series — but she has some clear favorites from her repertoire.
“My favorite all-time character to play is Lana Winters,” Paulson told Entertainment Tonight at Wednesday’s red carpet for American Horror Story: 13. The 51-year-old actor played investigative journalist Lana Winters on the Asylum and Roanoke seasons of AHS.
She went on to list off her next favorites as Cordelia from Coven, Tuberculosis Karen from Double Feature, Sally from Hotel and Bette and Dot from Freak Show,
Paulson then admitted: “Roanoke is at the end. I know people get mad at me. I don’t care. Bite me! Bite me hard. I don’t give a s***, sorry.”
She continued “I don’t like it, it’s not for me. I like a lot of things about it, but that one wasn’t for me. I don’t give a s*** about that season. Sorry!”
Roanoke, the sixth season of AHS, divided fans when it aired in 2016 due to its different format than the first five seasons: it started as a paranormal true-crime mockumentary before moving to a found footage style season.
Paulson played Audrey Tindall, an actress in the cast for the documentary My Roanoke Nightmare. She also resumed her role as Lana Winters in that same season. She co-starred alongside Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lily Rabe, André Holland, Wes Bentley and Evan Peters.
Although the season did not land with Paulson, Murphy was quick to defend the installment in a comment posted Wednesday night on Entertainment Tonight’s interview.
“JUSTICE FOR ROANOKE!” Murphy commented on Instagram. “My favorite season, Sarah’s least favorite…but she was so good in it! We’ve had arguments…”
AHS: 13 is set to premiere Thursday on FX. In addition to Paulson, the show will feature the return of AHS regulars Bates, Bassett, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Jessica Lange.
The new season comes after the latest release of Murphy’s other anthology series, Monster, a Netflix installment that dramatizes high-profile murder cases from real life each season.
Paulson starred as notorious serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. The show featured a fictionalized connection between Wuornos and the 1892 axe murderer Lizzie Borden, played by Ella Beatty.
