This simple laundry hack may help get rid of stains fast without using a washing machine or harsh chemicals
Few things are more infuriating than ruining your pristine white garments with a stubborn stain. Many stain removers on the market are either too costly or risk dulling the brightness of white clothing.
Harsh chemicals, residual detergent, and damaged fabric fibres are often the culprits behind white clothes losing their crisp brilliance. The result? Clothes that look grey, yellowed, or lacklustre.
With the back-to-school season upon us, here’s a nifty hack to banish stains rapidly without resorting to a washing machine or aggressive chemicals.
Best of all, it relies on a 24p item you’ve likely already got tucked away at home.
How to remove stains from clothes
The surprising secret weapon? A laundry pod.
Typically tossed straight into the washing machine, these little capsules are remarkably effective at tackling individual stains by hand.
Whether you’re dealing with a food splash, a makeup smudge, or a muddy patch, a pod can help break down the stain before it sets into the fabric. The trick is to burst the pod directly onto the affected area and then scrub by hand.
What you’ll need:
Ariel 4-in-1 pods are a reliable choice, though any brand will do the job, even those without specific stain-removal properties.
A pack of 50 pods from Sainsbury’s will set you back £12, working out to just 24p per pod.
Method
- Place the stained garment into a large bowl of hot water. Running a hot bath is a handy time-saving alternative.
- Once thoroughly soaked, burst the laundry pod directly onto the stained areas. Using the fabric itself, gently work the laundry detergent into the material.
- Expect to spend around one to two minutes scrubbing before the stain disappears, though older, more stubborn marks may require a bit more elbow grease.
- Once the stain has gone, you might be alarmed to notice your garment has taken on the hues of the laundry pod. Fear not, as these colours will fade away once the item is submerged back into the hot water.
- Should the discolouration linger, a further scrub will sort it out, restoring your clothing to a brilliant white. A single pod is sufficient to tackle two to three items in one go, though this is subject to the size of the stain.
- The real selling point of this hack is its cost-effectiveness. Not only does it cut down on energy bills by eliminating the need for a washing machine, but the pods themselves are remarkably budget-friendly.
An alternative approach.
Apartment Therapy recommends bicarbonate of soda as the most straightforward solution for whitening clothes. In their experiment, a mixture of equal parts bicarbonate of soda and water, left to sit for an hour, proved highly effective at treating stains.
They also advise adding baking soda directly to your regular wash cycle to help keep whites looking bright.
