I don’t know about you, but my childhood sleepovers had junk food, movies, games, and a lot of attempts to stay awake all night long. Well, Blumhouse Atomic Monster is looking to turn that familiar experience into something considerably more terrifying.
Insidious: Out of the Further director Jacob Chase is set to helm Sleepover, a new horror movie from Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures. The film has been described as the “quintessential sleepover nightmare.”
Sleepover scheduled to hit theaters on October 8, 2027, putting it right in prime Halloween movie season. Chase will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Bryce McGuire, the screenwriter behind Night Swim. The project is adapted from an original short story written by McGuire.
Chase has talked about his approach to frightening audiences and how closely he connects horror filmmaking with magic.
Ahead of the release of Insidious: Out of the Further, Chase said: “Scaring people is kind of like magic — literally magic tricks — which is also something I had a real affinity for growing up. It’s all misdirection, right? It’s figuring out how you can constantly surprise an audience in the way that the best magic tricks do.”
That philosophy should fit Sleepover nicely. The basic idea of a sleepover gives Chase plenty of opportunities to play with anticipation, misdirection, and the creeping suspicion that something is lurking in the dark while everyone else is asleep.
Jason Blum will produce the horror film, while Chase, McGuire, and Bea Sequiera are serving as executive producers. Lilly Tyson will oversee the project for Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
There aren’t any plot or casting details yet beyond the “quintessential sleepover nightmare” description, so exactly what turns this particular night into a horror show remains under wraps.
Still, Chase coming off another creepy trip into the Insidious universe and teaming with McGuire makes this one worth keeping an eye on.
