Joey Essex is one of ten celebrity contestants on Gary Lineker’s new ITV game show The Box.
The TOWIE star, 36, who is also known for Love Island and I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, joins Danny Aarons, Ellie Taylor, Graeme Souness, JB Gill, Jenny Ryan, John Bercow, Ranvir Singh, Sara Davies and Shakira Khan on the new ITV show. It comes as The Chase’s Jenny, 44, admitted she felt ‘guilty’ over brutal decisions in the new ITV show.
Hosted by Gary, 65, The Box is a thrilling new format that plunges the celebrities into the unknown. A synopsis teases: “With each celebrity enclosed in a yellow box, they’ll find themselves in mystery locations across the country.
“They will never know where they are, or what challenge is facing them on the other side. The challenges could be physical, mental, logical, funny, a bit daunting, or all of those at once.
“With minimal or no instruction, they must decipher and work out what to do. At the end of each episode, two players will battle it out in The Duel, a high-stakes head-to-head game to avoid elimination.”
Talking about appearing in the new ITV series, Joey admitted during one challenge he kept running into the woods as he had no idea what they were supposed to do, leading to the show using a drone to film him as he was out of sight of cameras.
The reality veteran said: “During one challenge I didn’t really get what we had to do, I just kept running. I ran off into the woods and I ran so far off course, they had to film me with a drone, because I’d gone out of sight of all the cameras.
“The thing that finally made me realise I’d completely gone the wrong way was there weren’t any cameras following me anymore. I thought, ‘I’d better turn back.’ That’s the beauty of the show. You genuinely don’t know what you’re supposed to do!”
Meanwhile, talking about working with Gary, Joey said: “As soon as I heard he was hosting the show, I was really excited. I’d worked with Gary a few times before, but never really got to know him properly. I know his son George as well.
Doing challenges alongside Gary is great. He’s one of those people who just feels familiar because he’s been on TV your whole life.
“You just feel like you already know him. His sense of humour was perfect for the show. He could be funny when he needed to be, but also serious when it mattered.
“You could tell he genuinely loved watching us tackle challenges. He worried about us when things got scary, but he was enjoying himself just as much as we were.”
The Box launches on Saturday 5th September, with Episode 2 airing on Sunday 6th September, on ITV1, ITVX, STV & STV Player.
