Winter fans have quickly hailed the new crime thriller as ITV’s answer to Silent Witness

Winter may have just started but there’s already been a mixed bag of praise and criticism.
ITV has officially released its latest crime thriller Winter with its first episode airing this evening, Wednesday, September 30, and the entire six-episode boxset available on ITVX.
The series follows forensic pathologist Dr Ethan Winter (played by Richard Armitage) after police discover the frozen body of a young woman at the back of a truck.
Winter is called in to investigate, later taking her in for further examination with help from his trusted assistants who helped open up the woman’s body.
Ahead of the episode, ITV did provide an explicit warning for viewings for “graphic scenes of violent death” but no one was prepared to see the victim’s insides.
“Holy moly – that looked gruesome!”, a fan exclaimed on X after watching the graphic scene. Someone else echoed: “I know they warned us, but…..gaaaaah!”, with a third writing: “F****** hell, wasn’t expecting to see that!”
Meanwhile, another viewer simply posted a GIF of a shocked Oprah Winfrey and a fellow fan joked: “Think I’ll eat my sarnie later…”
Despite the bloodied scenes, Winter has already gained itself a fanbase with some likening the show to the iconic detective drama Silent Witness.
“Is this ITV’s answer to Silent Witness?” with another questioning: “So is this Silent Witness ITV style?”
Others believe Winter “looks promising” with fans commenting how they were “enjoying it so far”. Someone else posted: “Looking forward to the start of Winter, anything with Richard Armitage is always excellent!”, with another user agreeing: “Got to watch this because Richard Armitage is in it!”
Winter will return next week with a fresh case for the team to investigate. This time the episode will feature the death of a construction worker whose face has been peeled away, so squeamish viewers should proceed with caution.
Episode two’s official synopsis continues to tease: “Using his unique forensic insight, Winter quickly establishes the victim never worked on the site and that his body was dumped there after death.”
