This European co-production weaves together multiple perspectives on the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. As well as following Afghan civilians trying to flee Kabul as the Taliban returned, we see French police officers, Italian diplomats, German military personnel and American intelligence services attempting to co-ordinate the evacuation against a looming threat of ISIS attacks.
This six-parter is most effective when following the westernised Afghan family, including the mother who was a judge and a son who worked with US intelligence. The scenes charting the diplomatic and bureaucratic quagmire of repatriating citizens are less compelling, but at least set out the scale of the challenge and the ticking of the clock. There are also plenty of scenes that set out the Taliban brutality that awaits anyone left behind. (Six episodes)
