During Season 1 or 2 of 2 Broke Girls, a table read included a scene where Max (Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) wore only bras while running around the apartment set. Rather than staying quiet, Dennings went to showrunner Michael Patrick King after the read.
She admitted she had little leverage back then. “I was not someone who had a lot of pull at that time to say, ‘I don’t want to do this,’ because we were young and very lucky to be on a show that was successful,” she said. Her request was simple: cut the scene or put the characters in clothes. King resisted at first, telling her, “No, I mean, this is the scene.”
Dennings fired back with five words that ended the argument: “You don’t pay me enough for a bra scene.” The scene vanished. “And sure enough the bra scene was gone,” she said. “Never underestimate yourself, is the moral of the story. And they weren’t paying me enough, although I don’t think anyone could.”
2 Broke Girls ran on CBS from 2011 to 2017 and was co-created by King and comedian Whitney Cummings. The show leaned into edgy, sexually charged humor, but it aired at 8 p.m. ET, near the start of primetime. For Dennings, this particular scene crossed a line.
Moreover, the bra scene story is not the first time Dennings has spoken about pressure surrounding her body. Last January, she recalled auditioning at around age 12 and hearing brutal feedback. Her takeaway: “It didn’t break my spirit. I was like, ‘I’ll show them.’” The actor’s message to fans mirrors that defiance.
