There’s no bigger event in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game calendar than the Yu-Gi-Oh! WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (WCS), as the top Duelists from around the globe are brought together to compete for the title of Champion. This is the event where the greatest Duelists are crowned in front of packed arenas, be it in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, Duel Links, or Master Duel, having beaten all challengers to their title.
2026 is a massive year for Yu-Gi-Oh, marking the franchise’s 30th anniversary. This means that the Yu-Gi-Oh! WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES 2026 event in Tokyo had to pull out all the stops. Comic Book Resources spoke to Dom Galizia, Head of Marketing at Konami Digital Entertainment about bringing together the fans, plans for the video games, and what lies in store for the franchise.
The Future Of Yu-Gi-Oh! On Its 30th Anniversary
CBR: So what would you say Yu-Gi-Oh! means to you?
Dom Galizia: I think Yu-Gi-Oh! means basically everything to me as an individual, but it means so much more to so many people. And I think that it is a wonderful story and a wonderful universe that has basically provided people with so much enjoyment throughout their lives. And for me, it’s no exception as a KONAMI employee and as somebody who’s been involved in and ingrained in the organized play system throughout Europe.
CBR: What’s your favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG card of all time, regardless of how good it was?
DG: So my favorite card is Grandmaster of the Sixth Samurai. One of my favorite decks was the Sixth Samurai, which was a very popular theme back in the mid-2000s, late 2008, 2009, that era. So I’m a really, really big fan of that theme.
CBR: Was it just because you liked the aesthetic or just the gameplay?
DG: So, when Grandmaster of the Sixth Samurai came out, it felt like a really cool new mechanic about the way it would return after being destroyed and add back a card after being destroyed, so it just stood out to me, and I really like Japanese culture. I was a big anime and manga fan, and when I gravitated towards Yu-Gi-Oh! then obviously, there was a samurai theme within Yu-Gi-Oh!: it meant a lot to me, and I just liked playing with it.
CBR: What are your hopes for the future of Yu-Gi-Oh!?
DG: I wish for Yu-Gi-Oh! to continue to be as successful as long as it can possibly be. We have big ambitions to make Yu-Gi-Oh! available to as many users as possible, and we’re here to deliver that and make it a multimedia franchise that appeals to as many people as possible. We believe we’re doing that, and we wish to continue doing so for a long time.
CBR: Yu-Gi-Oh! celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026. What’s coming up for the franchise?
DG: As you’ve seen, we’re introducing many new aspects to both the trading card game and the digital titles we produce, and this will continue for a long time. So everything we’re doing is aimed at providing people with the best possible experiences and ways to enjoy playing Yu-Gi-Oh! and engage with the IP, and that will be part of our strategy, as ever, moving forward.
CBR: What challenges does KONAMI face arranging and managing a tournament as big as the Yu-Gi-Oh! WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES 2026? Such as bringing Duelists from across the world and managing people who speak so many different languages.
DG: There are many points we have to consider very carefully. Obviously, there are logistical challenges such as bringing people from every major continent into a single location. But there are also finer details, like providing translations and interpreters for people at the event itself, so that everybody feels comfortable speaking in their native language. The universal language is the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, but then understanding how the conversations continue is really important for us.
We always look to make sure that we’re providing the best experience possible. So providing locations and experiences while at the Yu-Gi-Oh! WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES 2026 is a big part of what we plan and make sure that people have long-lasting memories so they can tell their stories as they move forward in their Yu-Gi-Oh! Life.
CBR: So, Yu-Gi-Oh! can be played via digital platforms. For example, you have Master Duel and Duel Links. As a fan of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection that came out this year, are there plans to do more Yu-Gi-Oh! games, or is it transitioning towards just these digital platforms?
Historically, KONAMI has always continued to develop and produce digital titles for users to enjoy. We will always continue to consider that as we move forward. You know, Yu-Gi-Oh! We have big plans for Yu-Gi-Oh! as we move forward, and I think it would be very fair to say that users can be very excited about what’s coming.
CBR: How important is the role of fan feedback for events like these? How much do you respond to fan feedback?
DG: So, you know, Yu-Gi-Oh! is such an iconic IP. It means a lot to so many people and obviously there are a lot of opinions about what should happen with the IP and what KONAMI could potentially do. We take all feedback very seriously. We are very passionate about the products we release, both physical TCG, OCG products and digital products. And we always take on board that feedback. We’re always considering what the community is saying and how they’re feeling.
But we believe in the products we release. In the end, we really believe in all the products we release, and we’re trying to deliver the best possible ones.
CBR: Obviously, the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG has the OCG and the TCG. Are there any considerations for merging them into a single game with unified rules?
DG: This is a long-standing question. And, you know, the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG is definitely very historical and traditional in terms of where it’s been and how it’s been played. I think the Yu-Gi-Oh! WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES 2026 is the pinnacle of competitive play, and I would say it’s the baseline for bringing people from all over the globe together to play in a single format. So the very special rules that we have here at the Yu-Gi-Oh! WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES 2026 are that moment, and it always brings people together.
