The headline may sound strange, but there is a political logic behind it.
Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy’s recent remarks against Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy have triggered intense discussion, particularly because he reportedly used unusually harsh language against Jagan and even referred to him by his caste name.
Interestingly, when Magunta was earlier with the YSRCP, he reportedly refused to criticise Chandrababu Naidu despite pressure to target him. That stand was said to have contributed to his differences with the party and eventually his exit. He later joined the TDP and became the MP from Ongole.
Now, the irony is striking.
The same Magunta who once refused to attack Chandrababu has reportedly gone after Jagan in strong terms. While this may appear to strengthen his position within the TDP, some political observers believe the opposite could eventually happen.
One theory being discussed is that Chandrababu’s strategy is to get certain leaders, particularly those with a history of switching parties, to make extremely harsh remarks against political opponents. Once they cross that line, returning to the rival camp becomes politically difficult.
Such leaders are then left with little option but to remain in the same party.
At the same time, they can still be kept at a distance within the ruling party without necessarily being given important positions. Since they have effectively closed the doors to the opposition, their political bargaining power becomes weaker.
That is why some are interpreting Magunta’s episode differently. By attacking Jagan so strongly, he may have actually made himself more dependent on the TDP.
If Chandrababu later distances himself from Magunta or keeps him away from major responsibilities, the Ongole MP could find himself with very few political options.
Whether this theory actually plays out remains to be seen, but the political consequences of Magunta’s remarks are already being debated.
His family members are also reportedly worried about why he chose to make such strong comments against Jagan. They are said to fear a strong backlash from the YSRCP camp.
With any possible return to the YSRCP now appearing difficult, his family is reportedly concerned about Magunta’s future political career.
