Matthew Rhys says ‘it’s going to be a rough week’ for his partner after bet revealed

Both Matthew Rhys and his partner and fellow actress, Keri Russell were nominated at the awards

Cardiff-born actor Matthew Rhys made history at the Emmy Awards on last night becoming the first person to win two lead acting prizes in one night. Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay swept the awards, winning big with multiple awards including Matthew Rhys winning for lead actor in a comedy series.

Matthew also won the award for his lead role in psychological thriller The Beast In Me. Whilst he won both categories he was nominated for, the actor’s partner and fellow actress Keri Russell did not to take home a trophy for her role in The Diplomat, that she was nominated for.

Speaking to press, whilst holding his two shiny new awards, the Welsh actor joked that “it’s going to be a rough week” for Keri after his win and her loss. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter

When asked if there was any playful competition happening in their home, Matthew said: “It’s not playful, it’s all serious. I put a lot of money on myself, the kids ran a book. I was odds on favour, it’s going to be a rough week for her and I’m sorry.

“I don’t know that I am (sorry) to be perfectly honest.”

Speaking heartfully about his long term partner, to whom they both parent their 10-year-old son and Keri’s two other children, he called her a “class act.”

“She’s always really the winner to be perfectly honest. And next year I think she might get one.”

Whilst Keri wasn’t mentioned in the Welsh actor’s acceptance speeches on stage at the star-studded event, Matthew gave a heartfelt mention to Wales.

He dedicated his win “to the great and good people of Wales, who were as much a nurture as anyone else”.

“We are a small but mighty nation. This is incredible,” he said, before adding “Diolch yn fawr iawn.”
