Warner Bros. will be taking another crack at Get Smart, the James Bond parody series that originally ran in the 1960s. The new adaptation is also lining up an Emmy-winning comedian to take on the lead role.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a new feature film based on Get Smart. John Mulaney is being eyed to star as Agent Maxwell Smart, the character previously portrayed by Don Adams in the original TV series. Steve Carell later played Smart in the 2008 feature film reboot. The next reboot is being written by Seth Grahame-Smith (Now You See Me: Now You Don’t), while Chuck Roven and Andrew Lazar will produce.
John Mulaney Would Be the Third Maxwell Smart
Mulaney is best known for being one of today’s most popular comedians. He recently sold out Wrigley Field after becoming the first comedian to headline at the venue. As part of his stand-up tour, John Mulaney: Mister Whatever, the comic just added nine shows in New York City in Jan. 2027, calling the addition Mulaney Takes Manhattan. He also hosted Saturday Night Live six times and appeared in TV shows like The Bear and Poker Face. After voicing Peter Porker in the Spider-Verse movies, Mulaney can next be seen on the big screen in Nicolas Cage’s upcoming John Madden biopic, Madden.
Get Smart was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. Originally debuting in 1965 and still hitting harder than most modern series, it served as a spoof of James Bond-style spy movies that were becoming increasingly popular at the time. Don Adams starred as bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart (Agent 86), joined by Barbara Feldon as his partner, Agent 99, as the two worked to thwart the evil organization called KAOS. The show ran for five seasons before concluding its run in 1970, winning several major Emmy Awards during that time.
Get Smart Had 2 Sequel Movies, a Revival, and a Reboot
In 1980, the series was revived with The Nude Bomb, a feature film that brought back Don Adams as Agent 86. Though Feldon was not featured in the sequel film, she later reunited with Adams for the TV movie Get Smart, Again!, which aired on ABC in 1989. Adams and Feldon reunited one more time for a Get Smart revival series on Fox in 1995, with Andy Dick playing their son, Zach Smart. It ran for one season and seven total episodes.
Steve Carell officially replaced Don Adams as Maxwell Smart in 2008’s Get Smart, the feature film directed by Peter Segal. Anne Hathaway co-starred as the new Agent 99, with other cast members including Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terry Crews, Bill Murray, and James Caan. A direct-to-DVD spinoff starring Masi Oka and Nate Torrence, Get Smart’s Bruce and Lloyd: Out of Control, was also released that year.
Warner Bros. has not yet set a release date for the new Get Smart movie.
