Gibson revealed: “I always liked 1984 because it was just such a mirror of the time I was living in and I was like, ‘Oh God, we’re there!’ It showed a pretty real picture of the hand of evil in the world.” Raymond asked: “[Of] what was coming?” And the Hollywood star replied: “Yeah. Well, [George Orwell] wrote it in 1948, he just reversed the numbers. Eric Blair, I think was his real name. He was like a journalist and he wrote that book Animal Farm and all that. Pretty interesting.”
Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four is set in a dystopian 1984 where Great Britain is known as Airstrip One and has become a province of a totalitarian superstate called Oceania. Meanwhile, dictator Big Brother has 24/7 government surveillance via the Ministry of Truth of all its citizens. Orwell’s magnum opus is considered one of the greatest novels ever written.
