Edi Gathegi, who stole scenes with his turn as superhero Mr. Terrific in last year’s Superman, has joined the bold-faced cast of Miami Vice ’85, Universal Pictures’ big-screen take on the classic TV series.
Gathegi joins a call sheet that already includes Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler, Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo and Andrew Schulz.
Joseph Kosinski, who helmed the propulsive Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is directing the new big-screen take on the 1980s TV show, with the feature project eyeing a November production start and shoots in New York and Miami.
The new feature will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami in a new version of the property, inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark television series
The Anthony Yerkovich-created TV series starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami police officers — James Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs — known for their love of fast boats and pastel suits. In the new update, Jordan is playing Tubbs while Butler is playing Crockett, the two swagger-strutting detectives.
In a key role, Gathegi will play a small-time crook with big time ambitions who is in over his head, according to sources.
Vice ’85 will be filmed for Imax and is set for release by Universal Pictures on May 19, 2028. Producing are Dylan Clark via his Dylan Clark Productions (The Batman) and Kosinski.
Gathegi gained attention from fans and critics alike who praised his cool under pressure and droll-natured take on Mr. Terrific, the long-standing DC Comics character, in James Gunn’s Superman. He reprises the character in next year’s sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
Gathegi’s feature credits include Western The Harder They Fall, opposite Idris Elba, Regina King, and Delroy Lindo for Netflix; X-Men: First Class; and some of the Twilight movies. He is also a series regular of the Apple TV’s acclaimed hit For All Mankind.
