It’s been three years since Dave Filoni left Ahsoka fans stranded on Peridea, with massive questions to ponder. The live-action headline series for Star Wars hero Ahsoka Tano – played by Rosario Dawson – brought the saga into all-new territory. Quite literally, since it took Ahsoka and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) out of the actual Star Wars galaxy and far, far away into a neighbouring one, on their quest to find long-lost Jedi friend Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi). While Ezra – along with big bad Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) – made his way home to the regular Star Wars galaxy at the end of Season 1, Ahsoka and Sabine were left on the wasteland of Peridea, a planet dotted with gigantic statues of ancient Force deities, the Mortis gods.
All of which means that fans have had Mortis on the mind for many years now – and with good reason. “It’s definitely a thing,” Filoni confirms of the Mortis Gods being a factor in Ahsoka Season 2. Introduced in The Clone Wars animated series, the Mortis Gods are a trio of mythological (or are they?) figures – The Father, The Son, and The Daughter – who embody the Force itself. Across three episodes, Ahsoka, Anakin and Obi-Wan are caught in a battle for power between the cosmic trio.
Whatever presence they have in Ahsoka Season 2, the invocation of the Mortis Gods will be a test of Ahsoka Tano’s own beliefs. “What we’re dealing with is: are you going to believe in this, or not? And what is the danger if it’s real? And how are you going to prioritise your goals here?” teases Filoni. “What would a Jedi do, versus what would a regular person do? Those things come up through the course of the season.”
While Filoni promises fans don’t need to watch The Clone Wars episodes first, the arrival of Mortis into Ahsoka marks another major instance of a Force concept from the animated series entering live-action, after Season 1 saw Ahsoka enter the World Between Worlds (first seen in Rebels). “It’s a challenge, I can tell you,” Filoni says of translating such heady concepts. “It was so surprising when George [Lucas] created these archetype god characters. What were we examining there in Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? A lot of it is about power, and what you do with power, and how you wield power. For a Jedi, I think it’s a natural story path to get into these questions.” Star Wars fans, your Mortis prayers are about to be answered.
