José Mourinho is the charismatic subject of a three-part profile for Netflix that hails from the same producer as Beckham. ‘You don’t do a documentary with a guy that wins nothing,’ reflects the legendary Chelsea and Real Madrid manager, on why the streamer chose him for the spotlight, while also taking the time to say ‘it’s not like I think I am special’.
Bear in mind that the ‘Special One’ says this after taking us on a tour of a room devoted to his achievements, from two decades’ worth of trophies to gifts from top players, the crowning detail of which is a large mural of him on the wall. The film was shot over two years and directed by Joe Pearlman, who made the wonderful and often hilarious Bros: After The Screaming Stops. Pearlman has a keen eye for the presence of ego in his subjects, and a knack for just letting them talk.
Aside from Mourinho himself, there are new interviews with his past players (Zlatan Ibrahimovi’c, Didier Drogba, John Terry, Javier Zanetti, Eden Hazard, Frank Lampard) his ex-staff (Rui Faria, André Villas-Boas) and great Premier League rival Sir Alex Ferguson. What stands out as you watch is not just the passion Mourinho has for the game, but the dedication that inspired in his players.
