M&S’s ‘striking’ £28 ‘no iron’ blouse is ‘very smart and luxurious’ for autumn

M&S has launched its new Autumn range and we’ve found a standout item

With its rich colour palette, dreamy textures and layering opportunities, Autumn is undoubtedly my favourite season when it comes to fashion. As something of a savvy shopper, I’m always on the hunt for pieces that look more premium than their price tag, and Marks & Spencer has just unveiled the perfect ‘dress up or dress down’ satin shirt for under £30 that I’m already considering in several shades.

The M&S Satin Collared Button Through Shirt is priced at a wallet-friendly £28 and is offered in sizes 6-24. The silky material provides a more luxurious, lustrous alternative to the cottons and linens of summer, ideal for the approaching cooler months.

Designed in a regular fit, featuring a pointed collar, long cuffed sleeves and a button-through front, it’s available in five jewel-toned shades ideal for autumn. The dark petrol offers a deep blue tone, while the reddish orange paprika has been described as ‘very striking’ by customers.

It’s also offered in dark aubergine and a gorgeous green that falls somewhere between chartreuse and olive. However, for those wanting something slightly more subtle, the antique rose presents a lovely neutral choice that feels particularly adaptable.

Style devotees have been adoring the shirt to such an extent that certain sizes are already sold out. Despite its August launch, some shoppers have already purchased multiple colours of the blouse, reports the Mirror.

Add a luxurious touch to your smart looks with this satin shirt. Cut to an easy-to-wear regular fit, it features a chic pointed collar neckline and classic long cuffed sleeves

“This is my fourth shirt of this type,” one reviewer admitted. “I love them because they’re a classic style that can be dressed up or down. They are also easy to wash, requiring minimal or no ironing. I deducted a star purely because I would prefer the buttons to be the same colour as the shirt.”

Another was full of praise for the paprika shade: “I was expecting a kind of orange, but the colour of this satin shirt is fabulous, it really glows, and will be a brilliant alternative to red for Christmas. It looks far more expensive than the price tag.”

“Love this. Bought in paprika, which is very striking,” a third commented. “I would say true to size but deliberately sized up as I like big shirts. The material is very luxurious, so I would say this is dressy rather than an everyday shirt.”

For those concerned about the upkeep of satin, one satisfied customer who had purchased several of the same style confirmed they ‘wash well’. They added: “Love this vivid green. Sizing is generous, so I buy a size smaller. Pleased with the shirt, I’d love this shirt in a bright red.”

Nevertheless, certain shoppers found the fit to be on the larger side, with one noting: “I’ve ordered size down, still, unfortunately, the shirt is huge and long.”

While another countered: “Great fit and lovely colour have ordered a second in the blue.”

Meanwhile, another five-star review said: “Beautiful olive green shirt. Nice fabric, not too heavy and a good length. Fit is a little snug across the bust, but that is often the case with M&S shirts. Looks very smart and luxurious, will be great over Christmas.”

For an alternative neutral choice on the high street, River Island is selling this Beige Slimline Satin Shirt for £29 – though it seems to be the sole colour available from the store. On their website, they’ve paired it tucked into chocolate faux leather shorts with a suede bag for an elegant multi-textured look.

As another option, Hawes and Curtis stocks this Fitted Shirt in taupe, black, navy and cream for £39. While these are all timeless wardrobe colours, they may not be regarded as quite as unique as M&S’s range – not forgetting the steeper price point.

For casual daywear, I’d French-tuck the M&S blouse into denim with ballet pumps, possibly with a light jumper draped over the shoulders for cooler weather. For work, consider wide-leg trousers or more structured styles with loafers or court heels.

Then at Christmas, these blouses can truly prove their worth by serving as the foundation for multiple party-appropriate ensembles. Combine with a skort and knee-high boots, accessorised with bold earrings and a clutch bag, and you’ve created a sophisticated outfit that feels contemporary without needing to purchase anything embellished with sequins.

The shirt forms part of M&S’s broader Autumn Love That campaign, where shoppers can explore pieces ‘set to define the season ahead’. This follows M&S reporting that 73% of UK adults are planning to purchase new autumn clothing, with 51% already mapping out their wardrobes ahead of September.

However, it’s essential that these wardrobe investments feel timeless, ensuring they can be worn season after season. The edit highlights some of the biggest trends, wardrobe staples and standout pieces suited to women of all ages, encompassing chocolate wool coats, satin dresses, luxurious knitwear and relaxed tailoring.

One of the campaign’s standout pieces is the £70 Faux Fur Tipped Short Jacket. Boasting an on-trend cropped silhouette and two-tone tipped faux fur, it delivers a sumptuously plush feel. M&S has paired it with a grey pinstripe suit for office wear, yet it’s the kind of versatile piece that exudes elegance, working equally well over slip dresses for evening outings or with jeans at the weekend.

Satin, however, looks set to reign supreme this autumn. The £45 Satin Cowl Neck Mini Tie Detail Waisted Dress is among the site’s top sellers this week, featuring a cowl neckline and a self-tie waist detail that enhances its flowing, drapey quality.

Additionally, there’s this blue satin co-ord, comprising a £65 jacket and £30 skirt. The jacket, in particular, is firmly on trend with its funnel neck silhouette and statement blouson sleeves.

For those willing to invest in something slightly pricier, this Satin Belted Trench Coat costs £80. This collared, double-breasted design includes storm flaps and shoulder epaulettes for a classic appearance, and while I originally had concerns it might not be an easy-care choice, it’s also machine washable.

Customers can browse all of the newest ‘Love That’ designs on the Marks & Spencer website.
